Covington Lumber & Construction Co. is a company that began as a sawmill and planer in the Short Community around 1925. Great-
Grandfather, C.H. Covington, bought the property at the current location and moved the sawmill & planer to Center. Shortly after this
purchase he & his sons, John & Billy, built the present retail building material store. In 1962, John bought the interest of his father and
brother Billy, at which time John and his wife Joy ran the business. They soon enlarged the store and began a successful floor covering
department and appliance business. In 1961, they opened a propane gas co., which they operated for 35 years. The propane business was
then sold to Billy Bob McAdams. Ms. Tammie Covington says the lumber company is a family affair with deep roots in Shelby County.
Johny Covington, John’s son, has been with the business since he started working there as a teenager. Joel Covington, John’s grandson,
joined the business in 2012 after college graduation. Jana Covington Keele, John’s granddaughter, joined the family business in August of
2013. Both Joel and Jana plan to pursue a life-long career in the building materials business to keep the family tradition going. Covington
Lumber & Construction Co. insists on furnishing the finest quality building materials for the best price. These materials include: lumber,
