Your LinkedIn Profile isn’ t that Important
by Bill McCartney, Think Social
es you need a basic profile to get started on LinkedIn. However in the bigger
Yscheme of things a very detailed profile is of less importance.
I am going to share with you three LinkedIn power tools to give you an opportunity to think differently and gain a significant competitive edge.
“ If you’ re thinking like everyone else, then you aren’ t thinking”
Your goal is to be active on LinkedIn. Not waiting for people to find your profile.
Distractions
Before I start lets have a reality check. You are receiving frequent connection requests from people you don’ t know?
You are receiving a stream of annoying emails? You find many LinkedIn groups are full of spam?
You don’ t understand why and are annoyed when people view your profile anonymously? You think many people make exaggerated claims in their profile?
Remember not everyone with the bestcompleted profile is worth connecting to.
Basically these are distractions. They stop you realising the incredible potential that LinkedIn offers you. I will address these distractions at my next LinkedIn workshop. However my main focus will be on the three LinkedIn power tools discussed below.
1. ADVANCED SEARCH Sit back and look at the LinkedIn website. The search bar takes prime position top dead centre because it is important. LinkedIn knows the value of search and sets a search limit on free accounts. If you actively use search and you should, then you will probably benefit from a premium account. More on premium accounts in a minute.
Many people just enter a persons name or key word and hit search. They seldom delve any deeper into search and miss a huge opportunity. Even at a simple level, click on the three horizontal lines just left of the search bar.
I call the icon a hamburger. This displays seven categories. Now experiment with those categories. For example I use the“ post” category and enter the key word LinkedIn. This displays all the articles people are writing regarding LinkedIn. It’ s useful information that I use to keep up to date on LinkedIn issues that concern people.
The next step on your Search journey is using Advanced Search. This gives you the opportunity to use targeted search. You can build a search that includes Locations, Connect Types, Companies, Title and Keywords, etc.
“ If you don’ t know how to ask the right question, you discover nothing.” Quote W. Edwards Deming
You can build search strings in keywords using Boolean searches that ask the right question. Advanced Search once mastered including Boolean and the mental game of search, offers huge opportunities. I will share tips and tactics using advanced search at my next LinkedIn workshop.
2. CAMPAIGN MANAGER“ Content is King.” A popular saying and very true if you have the resource to produce regular, valuable and relevant content. The reality is that if you are a small business or charity you probably don’ t have access to sufficient resource.
Advertising saves your precious time, requires little resource, reaches your target audience and helps you level the playing with bigger businesses.
“ Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but no one else does.” Steuart Henderson Britt
LinkedIn Campaign Manager offers targeted advertising to the world’ s largest online network of professionals. It provides three advert formats.
Sponsored Content Delivers adverts directly into the feed of your LinkedIn target audience.
Sponsored InMail Delivers personalised, relevant, valuable content to the LinkedIn messaging inbox of your target audience. Text Adverts – Quick and simple yet effective delivery of your adverts on LinkedIn.
I will give a live advertising demonstration using LinkedIn Campaign Manager at my next LinkedIn workshop.
3. SALES NAVIGATOR In a fiercely competitive world LinkedIn offers a choice of four premium accounts that will help give you a competitive edge. I use LinkedIn Sales Navigator as one of the four premium accounts. It offers more than just a powerful sales tool! It helps to build longterm relationships that drive results.
“ You don’ t close a sale, you open a relationship if you want to build a long term, successful enterprise.” Patricia Fripp
I will give an overview of the four LinkedIn premium accounts including a live demo of Sales Navigator in action at my LinkedIn workshop.
