big rube
of the Dungeon Family
Burning50: So tell me where you from and how you got started.
Big Rube: I was born and raised in the Swatts (South West Atlanta Georgia)at around 12 years old I decided I wanted to be a rapper ; at that time I didn’t think it could ever happen because there were no rappers from the South. In high school started hanging out with Rico Wade (Original Dungeon Family member), just hanging and clubbing. There were like 10 cats in the click that had talent so we decided to pool our money and do something; so we started a group called Parental Advisory.
Burning50: Hold on let me stop you right there for a second I was a PA fan I actually followed them that “What Was It For” was my favorite track
Big Rube: Yea Yea they were rapping hard core in those days that’s how they got their deal on Savvy Record (Pebble’s record label). Pebble’s was married to LA Reid and that’s how he ended up hearing the music, he asked who made the beats which was Organized Noize. LA asked Organized Noize to make a remix for TLC and they put Outkast on it he asked who they were and after some showcases he signed Outkast, Goodie Mob, and Society of Soul to LaFace Records and that is how the Dungeon Family got their foot in the door.
Burning50: Golly…Honestly I had no idea it went down like that …now Young Bloods were part of the Dungeon Family right?
Big Rube: Nah, see CeLo had a cousin name Pretty Ken and they had a click called the Addict Crew, they had their own crew but we were all cool.
Burning50: So now Witch Doctor is part of the Addict Crew right?
Big Rube: Nah he is who actually came up with the name “Dungeon Family”
Burning50: Ahh Come on man…Ahh wow I didn’t know that that is so cool.
Big Rube: Yeah you know the song “Everyday is a Holiday” we made that for the soundtrack for the movie “Bullworth”
Burning50: Now that I look back I can see the process so me and my older brother use to listen to music he had all the music and so I heard everything he got and so I followed dungeon family …and I had no idea what you was talking about then when I was like 9 -10 and now I realize that you were like 30 yrs ahead of your time. It is crazy.
As I got older it seemed like it was becoming a political situation that showed in the change in the music
Big Rube: Artist just want to be artist and make good music but we never stopped putting a message in our music World Party didn’t mean let’s have a party all over the world it was more like a political party with no bias or if we could settle our difference the world would be one big party.
See I am going to give you something on the surface you can relate to but there is a message under the surface that after a few listens you will began to catch it ..our music was designed to reach every one of every age. Our goal is to produce albums; real music.
P: I have a question the infamous “Whose that looking through my window?” looking back now at the spiritual /prophetic relevance of the song does it make you feel to see it unfolding in real time.
Big Rube: Well you could see it happening then …with the cell phones, the upc code, computer chips, etc they tested the chips on dogs first to see if it would work so that they can be used for people and the fear of not being able to find your child will make people get them. The technology was already there but back then when you talked about it people would say that nobody would let them do that but when you look at it now with the Patriot Act and various terrorist situations builds the fear. Like with the introduction of TiVo and different things like that.
Burning50: Did you know that UF has the second biggest super computer in whole world.
Big Rube: I can believe that it makes sense…There is a lot of intelligence in Florida with NASA etc. The first automobile was electric there was a guy in the 70’s made a carburetor that could make any car get 70 miles to the gallon …He Disappeared. But now is the time for hydro electric car fueling due to oil not being produced by the earth so when it is gone it is just gone. Due to the burning of the oil the environment is negatively impacted Global warming is actually misnamed it is actually global climate change.
Burning 50: What do you think of the Blue Harp Antenna? The antenna that the government can use to control the weather?
