BURDEKIN REGION

SNAPSHOT

The Burdekin region is about 34 per cent of the total Great Barrier Reef ( GBR ) catchment area . The region consists of five major catchments : Black , Ross , Haughton , Burdekin and Don .
Approximately 90 per cent of the region is used for grazing , 1 per cent is irrigated agriculture primarily associated with sugarcane farming and horticulture and the balance contains conservation areas and urban centres .
Improving the quality of water flowing from the land to the sea is critical to supporting the GBR ’ s health and resilience . That is why NQ Dry Tropics works with landholders and land managers on projects to improve water quality in local waterways .
Our approach focuses on practical solutions developed and delivered in partnership with land managers , industry and community groups , researchers , governments , and Traditional Owners . We bring together the best science and local knowledge , in a framework of adaptive management and continuous improvement .
NQ Dry Tropics is a community-based , not for profit company that has been delivering sustainable management of land , water and biodiversity in the dry tropics of North Queensland for 20 years . We have been delivering reef water quality programs since 2008 .
