News & Events Lama Tiles @ USM Products Talk Lama Tiles’ Marketing Manager, Mr Gary Ho, highlights the features and advantages of the company’s range of products at recent USM QS Club Products Talk . IT IS SAID that success is not a destination but a journey; for Lama Tiles the trek began in 1951 with the establishment of Butterworth Brickworks Sdn Bhd, later changed to Lama Tile (Utara) Sdn Bhd in 1997. Whatever the marque, it has been, in no uncertain terms, a long haul, spanning more than six decades. Making a name for itself in the production of clay bricks and profiled roofing tiles (“LAMA 62”) for building construction, the company has since consolidated its position in the industry as the manufacturer of choice, founded on quality workmanship, service and innovative technology. To date, Lama Tiles is the oldest and largest privatelyowned enterprise in concrete roofing tiles and metal doors/window frames in Malaysia and Singapore. USM QS Club Products Talk In a recent presentation by Mr Gary Ho Wai Lun, the USM Products Talk was as good a platform as any to highlight the origins of the Lama Group and its range of products, accessories and services: • Duly certified and approved by SIRIM, IKRAM, SPNB and TCVN (Vietnam) and compliant with standards European (EN 490:1994, EN 491: 1994) and ASTM C 1492 – 03 (American) and JIS A 5402 (Japanese), the Lama ROMAN range of Extruded Interlocking Concrete Roofing Tiles are specially designed to provide higher structural strengths for a higher break loading and resistance against cross winds, with moderately sized, yet deep, water course to optimise water flow especially during heavy rainstorms. • Lama’s Ultimate Cool Roofing Solution, namely, energyefficient KOOL@ROOF which incorporates COOLTECH roofing tiles, heat-reflective (22-80%, depending on colour) radiant barriers, ZEPHER solar-powered roof ventilation/ heat extraction system and “Breathable” Ridge & Hip Dry Fix to remove any remnant penetrated heat. The bottom line is (a) reduction of 10°-30°C at the surface and 5°-15°C indoors and up to 10% in cooling costs, translating to approximately 1.0 metric ton of CO2 emission per annum for a 200m² light- ZEPHER Solar Ventilator. • • • coloured COOLTECH Heat Reflective Tile. LAMANO Luxury Tiles of highly-compacted green concrete, suited to roof pitches of 25° and above and as low as 5° with ISOLINE system. Green products with low VOC, LAMANO Tiles are long lasting and durable, self-cleaning with nanotechnology and, therefore, requiring little maintenance. Other features include low porosity, fire resistance, acoustical insulation, high solar reflectance index (SRI) and UV resistance. Full range of roofing components, including (a) Lama Ridge Tree (for fast and convenient installation and easy levelling of ridge runner), (b) Lama ‘breatheable’ ridge and hip dry fix with self-adhesive butyl backing, to replace traditional wet cement mortar fixing, (c) Lama Abutment Flashing Strip (nailed/ screwed over abutment dry fix to provide sealing). ZEPHER Solar Ventilator, powered by energy from the sun to extract stagnant and hot air built up indoors (via radiation) through vented ceilings/exhaust fans at rates of more than 1015 times that of standard Whirlybirds - ideal energy-saving application for homes, commercial buildings, offices, factories and warehouses, schools and leisure outlets. ■ (Note: The recent Product Talk was organised by USM QS Club for its first and second year students from the Architecture and Quantity Survey course; special thanks to Prof Dato’ Dr Abdul Rashid Mohamed, Dean of the School of Educational Studies, USM, and Lewis, USM QS Club representative.)
