BUAS BLEND NOV ‘ 21

How to survive BUas ... and make the best out of your time here !

Long classes , strict deadlines , loads of projects … Yes , getting your degree takes some time , but I promise you it won ’ t be all bad . You know , there is a reason why so many people say that their time as a student was the best time of their lives . Because meeting new people , discovering new places and learning new things is a lot of fun . Especially if you are finally able to study something you find interesting . Just in case you do need some encouragement before starting a new degree , here are some tips on surviving BUas in the best way possible , brought to you by your favourite BUas lecturers and alumni .
Be at school as much as possible to work there . That ’ s how you can separate it from your private life as much as possible , and your student room becomes a place to chill and relax . Be involved in class . Lecturers notice and are much more willing to help you out when you participate in class . I especially feel that is true , now that I ’ m a lecturer myself .
Have fun and go crazy . It ’ ll be over before you know it . - Julia Meijer , Creative Business alumni & staff .
‘ Enjoy and focus on the things you want to do , instead of what social media and the world are convincing you to enjoy ’.
There is an overabundance of things to do while in college . Going out , partying , doing volunteer work , getting a job , working on your own business , studying , hanging out with friends and everything else in between . You are not supposed to do * everything *. Instead , focus on what you want to do . Life ’ s way too short to do what other people want you to do . - Mathijs van der Kroft , Creative Business alumni & staff .
Try to get involved as much as possible to build a strong network with fellow BUas students and / or lecturers . Find the water taps with ice-cold water , that is my favorite place to go during Summer ! Go and have some lunch or dinner at Sibilicious , it ’ s very nice and something different than the sandwiches from the Frontier canteen - Lisa van Duijn , Tourism alumni & staff .
Read the grading criteria ( the ‘ rubric ’) of your courses ! Make sure you understand what you need to do to pass . Many times , I ’ ve seen students fail because they delivered submissions that didn ’ t fulfil the requirements of the course . The teachers and mentors will try to give you this information - make sure you receive it and fulfil it !
Put the course delivery dates in your calendar - and put reminders of those dates earlier in your calendar ! If I have a big conference presentation to give , I make sure I put reminders in my calendar for the previous weeks to ensure I ’ ve spent sufficient time preparing for it .
Work regular hours and start on deliverables early . You can often get ahead on your courses by working a regular amount of hours every day . Try to avoid all the work gathering in the weeks ( days , or hours !) just ahead of the final moment . If you schedule a few hours outside of classes every week and focus during those sessions , you stand a good chance of getting ahead and lowering your stress levels .
Learn to silence social media and notice when you are letting it suck away your time . If it helps you relax , that ’ s great , but a lot of social media has very mixed or even negative impacts on both our mental health and the time we have for more beneficial things .
