LIVER PANCREAS DISEASE CENTER I’ve always appreciated their honesty and willingness to keep me informed and involved in the decision process at every stage of my treatment and care. Kupper received a colon cancer diagnosis in 2000. Treatment involved a surgical resection and a course of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Eighteen months later, she was told the cancer had metastasized to her liver. Her oncologist based in Fort Worth referred her to the transplant team at Baylor Dallas. The transplant team, including the liver surgeon, radiologist, hepatologist, oncologist and many other members, reviewed her case and developed a course of treatment. “The tumor in my liver was located in a difficult place to access,” said Nancy Kupper. “My 10- hour surgery was extremely complex, involving a large liver resection and the insertion of a hepatic arterial infusion port to infuse chemotherapy throughout the liver. Without the surgical skill and the many years of follow-up care by my surgeon, nurse transplant coordinator and other members of the transplant team, my outcome might not have been as positive.” Kupper said she feels lucky to have been referred to the transplant team at Baylor Dallas for her surgery and care. “Throughout my journey, I’ve been reassured and calmed by the compassionate team of caregivers at Baylor. I’ve always appreciated their honesty and willingness to keep me informed and involved in the decision process at every stage of my treatment and care.” 15
