THAT LAST A LIFETIME
The tour was one of the most fulfilling and comprehensive experiences I ’ ve had to-date . And we saw that music was a way to connect people beyond words .
JAMES OBASIOLU , BSYO CELLIST , KAPPELMAN FAMILY SCHOLAR
In 2020 , the children of Dr . Murray and Joan Kappelman established an endowed fund in their parents ' names to support the tuition costs of one or more BSYO students . James has been a Kappelman Family Scholar for three seasons running . As Lee Kappelman has shared , “ There is no greater way to honor our parents than to support the BSYO and extraordinary young musical scholars like James whose talent and leadership have made our family so proud .”
One of the top youth orchestras in the state , 239 students from across the region participated in one of three tiers of ensembles , meeting 33 times across the season through weekly rehearsals , sectionals , and workshops , including two side-by-side rehearsals with the BSO . To celebrate ten years , the BSYO held every concert at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall , and 76 students joined in a formative European Tour ( performing in four cities across 12 days ). Thanks to support from our Official Education Partner Transamerica , everyone who “ bought a bar ” in a special tour commission , and many funders , price was never a barrier to participation — or European travel !
