In the fall , students in the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra joined members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a side-by-side rehearsal of Aaron Copland ' s Appalachian Spring onstage at the Meyerhoff . Not only did students enjoy playing alongside seasoned professionals who know the music intimately , but for two families , the moment was particularly special . BSO Cellist Bo Li shared the experience with his son , violinist Ryan Li , and Assistant Principal Trumpet René Shapiro sat side-by-side with his daughter Teyha .
AN EVENING TO REMEMBER Music Director Laureate , Marin Alsop returns alongside soloist , Augustin Hadelich
Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop made her triumphant return to Baltimore with a program that matched the energy of the audience present . The program , built around themes of perseverance and triumph , featured three composers whose work seemed to embody the feeling of the zealous crowd ' s enthusiasm . William Grant Still ’ s In Memoriam : The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy opened the concert with a grave but charming melody to set the tone for the evening ' s musical journey . Shostakovich ’ s Violin Concerto No . 1 followed , with soloist Augustin Hadelich delivering an electric and nuanced performance . Hadelich expertly showcased a wide range of musical colors and emotions throughout the piece , masterfully captivating his audience . The program ended with Beethoven ’ s Symphony No . 5 in C minor , a piece that is as well-known as it was wellreceived by the audiences in Baltimore . Alsop led the BSO in a lively and expressive performance of this iconic symphony .
