You ’ re quite busy with multiple orchestras , so let ’ s jump right in ! For those who don ’ t know , how long have you been with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ?
JE : I first guest conducted the BSO for Marvin Hamlisch in 1982 . The BSO asked me to return on several occasions . Then naming me Principal Pops Conductor , 17 years ago , I believe .
That ’ s a long time ! What was so special that drew you to this opportunity ?

Jack Everly — A name that has become nearly synonymous with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for almost two decades . As our Principal Pops Conductor , Maestro Everly has been instrumental in creating programming that has served as an entry point for welcoming new concertgoers and a long-standing staple for those returning . We spoke with him to chat about his global acclaim and ability to captivate audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds as he culminates his role with the BSO during this monumental season .
JE : A great orchestra . [ The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ] is one of the greatest orchestras in North America . It was an honor to be asked and ultimately accepted to be the Principal Pops Conductor .
Working with four orchestras , I ’ m sure you ’ re doing lots of programming . How do you differentiate programming for Baltimore from other cities ?
JE : I don ’ t program for the city but for the orchestra , and for the audience . That ’ s what informs the programming . I know the audiences ’ tastes and so it ’ s a balancing act to find music that is both familiar and unfamiliar . I plan a repertoire that is exciting and musically challenging for the orchestra .
Pops is very exciting . What drew you to this art form ? Why Pops ?
JE : Why not ?! It ’ s a wonderful and challenging repertoire . It embodies all genres . Given my terrific training in the Broadway theatre , I bring a theatrical pacing that has proven to be enjoyable and successful with our audiences and musicians . My background and all of
