The master plan for the Songzhuang
Arts and Agriculture City offers a forward
looking vision for the integration of agriculture and an urban environment. The
plan strives to enhance the relationship
between people and the land, while
creating new economic opportunities
around China’s focus on innovation. In
response to the quickly evolving
environment of land outside of Beijing,
the plan establishes a series of systematic
principles, scenarios, and ideas that
advocate an integrated approach to
economic, social, and environmental
sustainability while creating a long-term
vision for a more livable new city.

A series of urban design principles also
guide development of the master plan.
These principles articulate the overall
objectives of the vision into a physical
structure that creates a series of
self-sustaining communities that foster
creativity, facilitate a high quality of life,
and respect and restore site hydrology
and ecology. At the overall site level, these
principles lay out guidelines for
interconnectivity and integration. Lastly,
the principles advocate an integrated
approached to sustainability where multiple
site level and building systems come
together to create self-sustaining
communities and environments.
