In 2011, following the BGreen Plan for Sustainability, Mayor Bill Finch commissioned a parks
master plan to ensure all citizens and visitors
have access to the parks and park amenities that
are aligned with the needs of their communities.
The resulting plan has created a road map
for achieving this goal through the creation of
new parks and the addition of amenities and
visibility to the city’s existing parks.
To gather feedback on the plan and build a
partnership base, a diverse public outreach
strategy was an integral part of the planning
process. Feedback revealed that family-friendly
parks and amenities, such as playgrounds,
splash pads, picnic shelters, and swimming
facilities are the most desired park improvements.

Bridgeport Park Master Plan

A system-wide inventory and needs assessment revealed
abundance in the city’s overall park acreage, but deficits in
park amenities, recreational programming, and distribution
and acreage of high-quality neighborhood-scaled parks.
This analysis identified a centralized belt of high need in the
urban neighborhoods at the City’s core. Meeting the open
space and recreation needs of this central need belt is a
high priority of the master plan.
The Bridgeport Park Master Plan represents a comprehensive
understanding of the importance of green, healthy open
spaces to the community and to city-wide revitalization of
Connecticut’s largest city.
