Scholarships Sh owcas e: S t u d e n t 2013 BS L A S chola rshi p Wi n ners Each year the BSLA awards up to three scholarships to deserving landscape architecture students from or attending an accredited program in Massachusetts or Maine. In the past, the BSLA has raised money through events to fund this important endeavor. In 2010, the BSLA received a generous gift from Charles W. Harris, FASLA, Landscape Emeritus of Harvard University to ensure the continued success of the program. This year our Scholarship Committee selected three winners: Ngoc Doan, Evan Hammond and Jacob Sippy. Ngoc Doan A native of Vietnam, Ngoc is a Master of Landscape Architecture candidate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College in 2011, Ngoc recognized the potential for landscape architecture in order to connect children and their environment. She has since devoted herself to the pursuit of constructing a productive playground in Vietnam. By working with a local non-profit, she has “utilized her knowledge in Landscape Architecture” to design “a productive landscape” that is “both economically beneficial and sustainable.” Ngoc is the first place recipient of UMass’s Paul Whitney Rhoades and Carolina Pree Rhoades Award and served as the President of the Vietnamese Students’ Association while at Boston College. 46 BSLA 100
