Loving your home means making your house feel like a home by adding personal touches that have meaning to you and your family. A home should be something you look forward to retreating to. Items that you bring in to your home should serve their functional purpose but there’ s no reason why they can’ t reflect your style and personality. My wife loves personalized items. It’ s a running joke in our household that if it’ s pink and has an initial or monogram, she’ ll love it. Here’ s what I did for her as a Christmas present this past year and the story behind it.

Then, the final touch was the storage under the seat. Needless to say, she loved her present for Christmas. It’ s the little touches like this that make our house a home for our family. Our family has an obsessive habit of sitting in the kitchen at the end of every afternoon and discussing our day, so it serves not only as a decorative piece, but a very functional conversational area. A couple of years ago Christy spotted a bench she wanted in a retail store. I am a relatively frugal person, so I couldn’ t see paying several hundred dollars for a piece of furniture that was poorly constructed of cheaper materials. Let’ s face it, with normal use, these pieces just don’ t hold up. Shortly after this, we had found a bed frame and Christy told me she wanted me to make it into a bench. OK, I thought, this cannot be that difficult, so I started out on this task. When I finished, I was impressed, I had accomplished something I wasn’ t sure I could do and it looked fantastic! We put it in our home, and while it did look impressive, it was a little too large for what we were originally wanting. So, that bench, along with several more to follow, we sold through Brooks and Company. Well, it occurred to me, that Christy had still not gotten the bench that she longed for. So, I thought for Christmas, I would create one tailor made for her. I thought about all of the things she loves and incorporated them into the bench construction. As
