As video production workflows feel the pressure of growing volumes of content in ever-larger file sizes and formats, cloud storage has emerged as an appealing — and now widely accepted —cost-effective solution. In fact, media companies are turning to public cloud, private cloud or a combination of the two to support their graphics, transcoding, review and approval, and distribution processes today.

Given the rate of cloud adoption for content creation and delivery, it should be no surprise that content owners are now turning to the cloud to manage valuable asset repositories. Indeed, media asset management (MAM) in the cloud is unsurprising in the same way that “dumb storage” is being replaced by intelligent file systems that manage content across both online storage and more affordable nearline and cloud storage. What’s more, cloud-enabled MAM systems can harness the power of content metadata, which makes searching, analyzing and tracking content by metadata possible in the cloud. And in some cases, this metadata also will include new data, such as cloud object IDs.

By accommodating both on-premise and cloud-based applications, advanced file systems make the hybrid nature of on-site/in-the-cloud workflows virtually invisible to users. Because many of the industry’s most popular applications are already avail-able in cloud-based versions, the shift of associated workflow stages and processes from on-premise to the cloud often can be undertaken seamlessly. Users stay working with the familiar tools they use every day, while making collab-oration more effective with team members at geo-graphically distributed sites. The result: improved access to creative resources, reduced overall costs and decreased time-to-delivery.

The rich APIs (application programming interfaces) that simplify managing content across multi-tier file system are
