Bridging the Gap (Interior Major Project) | Page 31

THE HOUSING CONCEPT. The concept of the community centre is for young adults to feel like they have a second ‘home’ within the facility. This concept has allowed me to create the idea of breaking apart the traditional house layout, and placing them inside the church in an abstract way. To work out what is needed, the diagram below breaks down the traditional interior layout and analyses how each space can be incorporated within the community centre. Figure 82. The living spaces within the facility will be incorporated into multiple spaces, due to the community centres main goal, to promote socialising within the ASD community and public. They will be in the form of a traditional living room layout, to a more open dining space with various seating arrangements. Figure 83. The large kitchen within the facility is to not only provide for the cafe, but to allow young adults to learn how to cook for themselves domestically. Sessions will run where small groups will come in and learn how to prepare simple dinners, and gain qualifications in culinary skills to boost employability. Figure 84. Although a typical house may not have an exercise/wellbeing space, It is important to promote daily fitness into everyday lives. This space within the facility will allow users to understand the importance of exercise, and feel like they can come here and feel safe away from vulnerable, public gyms. Figure 86. Figure 85. The bedroom space within the facility is to allow young adults to learn domestic skills that neurotypical individuals may pick up with ease. Activities inside the space will be learning basic skills such as learning to make the bed and change a bed, and have a familiar space to relax in away from home. Figure 87. The en-suite within the bedroom space will be used to teach young adults simple domestic skills that again, neurotypical individuals may not easily pick up. This will range from how to keep their bathroom at home clean, to learning how to independently brush their teeth. Page | 30
