Get to know the Read to Rise
Authors who captured the hearts of
the Guayaguayare R.C. Students
Students and teachers alike have
shared why Read to Rise truly
is a special programme. They
acknowledged that authors who
visit the classrooms are met with
bright eyes. Read to Rise sets the
context and when an author
arrives, the students at
Guayaguayare R.C. are anxiously
awaiting. Oftentimes, Guayguayare
R.C. students have engaged in
multiple activities with just one
book-read alouds, art, painting,
drama, and even musicals.
Authors Sharing:
Home grown authors from Trinidad
and other parts of the Caribbean
were invited to read excerpts from
their book to give children first-
hand knowledge of what it takes to
write a book and to bring to life the
book through spoken word.
Story Telling:
Read to Rise offered children to
hear familiar old wise tales in the
classroom and at scheduled family
time events.
Artists:
R2R resident artists helped to
interpret the students' stories
through art which made the stories
come alive.
Sports Mentors:
R2R also benefited throughout
the years from a sport-focused
institution, TT Pro-League who
participated and encouraged their
football players to visit
classrooms and participate in
classroom readings. TT Pro-
League provided a small
monetary contribution to the
2014 writing contest.
"Our children should be
proud of the Caribbean and
our authors.
Our children should become
culturally competent
learners.
Our children should
appreciate our heritage and
appreciate where they live.
Our children should know
that the Caribbean is
dynamic, diverse filled with
colorful stories and
experiences."
