Continued from page 3 Schell s Border Batch Beginnings-Part 3
To me one of the chapters finest hours was at the Minneapolis Canvention. We decided it
would be fun to invite the Concord Singers from New Ulm to perform at the happy hour
before the main banquet. I worked for a Goodyear Retail store at the time and was able to
donate a color TV which we sold raffle tickets for. The money was then used to sponsor the
singers to appear at the Canvention. We kept this little secret to ourselves not even telling
the host North Star chapter. The look on everyone s faces when they strolled in and started
singing was priceless. We had brought along cases of Deer Brand beer for them and ended
up serving it to the rest of the crowd too. When Schell s won the Can of the Year again
that year at the banquet, the cheers from the crowd were awesome. Never been prouder to
go up and accept that trophy.
Getting into the middle 80 s Bob who was a contractor by trade was finding it hard to get
enough work and started to explore other avenues of employment eventually taking a job
in Sprit Lake at Berkley. During this time he wasn t able to devote the time necessary to run
the chapter in the way it was run in the past so pretty much everything was dumped in my
lap. Being an officer on our local Fire Department and being on several town committees in
addition to owning my own business made it tough for me to devote enough time to the
chapter and the hobby in general also. So when my term of president came up, I turned the
duties over to Jay Smith from Minnesota Lake and stepped back from both the hobby and
the chapter for several years. Part 4 coming in the fall issue of Brewings.
