SCHELL ' S BORDER BATCH
Volume 32 Issue 1
Greetings Fellow Border Batchers,
As we all sit here in the dead of Winter with snow and cold all around us, it warms me up just thinking about the great year we just had as the Schell’ s Border Batch. I can’ t hardly believe an entire year has gone by since I was installed as President of this great fun loving chapter. It’ s been a pleasure to hold this position and pretty easy as I’ m surrounded by great officers and members. This chapter is all about friendship and having great times with collecting almost an afterthought and this year didn’ t disappoint. From the Spring show at the brewery to the Christmas party in New Ulm, we had a blast. It’ s nice to see other members stepping forward to take the reins of officers and carry the chapter into the next decade.
As many of you know, this year was the 30 th Anniversary of the chapter’ s forming. I’ ve always said that we are so fortunate to not other have a local brewery in our backyard but to have them support us and be able to communicate with them on a personal level. I’ m sure there are many chapters throughout the country that would love to have that situation. Schell’ s continues to produce many fine seasonal and specialty beers to please just about any beer drinker out their, so do your part as members and support them every chance you get. If only I could talk Ted into buying the Hamm’ s Beer brand and do with it what he has done with Grain Belt Premium. A gift shop just 45 minutes from my front door would be a scary thought.
This past year we of course had our full slate of shows which were well attended starting with our Spring show at the Brewery in New Ulm. We have always paired up with the Dakota chapter on this weekend making a two for one special. They put on a great show on Saturday with some special home tours Friday night that well worth attending. This year the weather didn’ t really cooperate with us on Sunday as it rained pretty much the entire day in New Ulm. That certainly didn’ t stop us as we packed the Tap Room at the brewery and still had a great time. We even had the BCCA President attend. Next up was our annual Stubiefest and once again the brother Stuber’ s did it up right. From the Billy Beer can shoot, the hay
ride and bar tour of New Ulm to the party complete with Karaoke this is a must attend party. It just keeps getting bigger every year. Next year we’ ll probably need two hay racks. Then of course is the wrap up of the year, the Christmas party in New Ulm. Our new President StubieDoo starts this day out with a bang hosting a little get together at his house which includes a micro beer exchange, a feast fit for a King and general merriment for all. I even got in on the exchange this year and was amazed at the scope of different beers there were to choose from. Then on to the B & L Bar in beautiful downtown New Ulm. These guys always throw out the welcome mat for us and this year was no exception with a special table, donated auction items and cold Schell‘ s products on tap. We also had them display our grand prize raffle sign and help sell us some tickets for a couple weeks prior to the party. Thanks guys! We had about 75 tickets left to sell upon arriving at the bar and those were quickly dispensed to the locals at the bar. We had our annual antique beer tasting contest and this year by far was the worst looking beer I have ever seen. Someone brought in a Western Brew from Iowa and when I went to open it the opener broke through the cap instead of taking it off. As the local patrons looked on in disbelief, Father Furry did have a sip as did Jay but I think they were the only ones brave enough. Col. Tom then proceeded to auction off several items from the bar and the Hamm’ s Club which went quite well. By then it was time for the much anticipated drawing for the Hamm’ s Scene-O-Rama. The lucky winner was New Ulm native Wally Lieck who had been at the bar earlier in the day and had left before the drawing. Stubie and I both gave him a call to congratulate him although I’ m not quite sure he was able to comprehend what transpired to a bad phone connection.
I wish to thank everyone for the fantastic support and fun that I had this year as President and wish our incoming President the same. I just read Schell’ s is bottling their Bock Beer, Bock Fest is just around the corner and with that it has to be Spring soon. See ya in the funny papers. Steve
