Brewings Brewings Vol 29 Issue 4

SCHELL ' S BORDER BATCH
Volume 30 Issue 4
Time for another newsletter, seems like my tenure as President is going by fast. I’ m having a hard time believing it is October already, where did the summer go? The leaves are turning and the Octoberfest beers have hit the store shelves. I hate to say this, but the white stuff will soon be flying. Well, let’ s move on to some business.
We had a chapter meeting at Larry Holm’ s place in August and I thought the meeting was quite well attended. I’ m really liking these chapter meetings, you get to view other members collections, have a few beers, find out what is happening with the chapter and just plain have a good time. Gotta say, Larry makes a mean batch of Kraut & Dumplings, awesome stuff!! The next meeting will be in February or March sometime. Not sure who is hosting it yet or the exact date but we will update all in the next newsletter. If anyone wants to host a meeting, just let an officer know.
Stubiefest was a huge success again. I know the Border Batch bank account got bigger, thanks to all who helped out. I must say, the hayride is one I will never forget. I felt like Andrew Zimmer on Bizarre Foods. With provocation from Larry Holm, I chewed on a bale of hay for the first time in my life, it sorta tasted like weeds marinated in Schell’ s Octoberfest. A bale or two of hay was broken open and the wagon was a sea of hay. I think I still have hay in my ears. Anyway, the food, Billy can shoot, hayride, raffle prize, beer, karaoke, and whatever else I’ m missing, would not have happened without all the support from the great people in this club. It makes my job easier, I can just drink beer and BS and take all the accolades. Ha Ha. Again, THANKS to all for a great Stubiefest.
The chapter has a couple of BIG things in the works. First off, Steve Miner has graciously donated a Hamm’ s moving sign to be raffled off for the 30th anniversary of the chapter next year. We will be starting to sell tickets at the upcoming Guzzle & Twirl show. Tickets will be sold throughout next year, with the drawing to be held at our Xmas get together in 2009. This is a great sign to hang in ANY collection and I hope everyone thanks Steve for doing this. Secondly, we are planning on having an original / rebuilt 1932 Hauenstein delivery truck at
the April 2009 show. If you take a look back at the last newsletter( June / July 2008) you can read all about this truck. Apparently there were only 274 of these trucks ever made and I’ m willing to bet that, this is probably the last one in existence. The owner wants to bring it back to New Ulm and show it off. So, we are hoping to make this a reality for the owner and a big, big treat for the chapter. I sure hope we can pull this off.
The annual Batch Xmas party is coming up soon, the date is December 13th. The day starts at Mark Stueber’ s place with a Micro beer exchange and a potluck lunch. Then we move over to the B & L bar for the antique beer tasting. If you have any old beers laying around bring them with and have some fun. I know most of us will sample them, and in the end, one brave soul( who shall remain nameless) usually takes a glass full out of the slop bucket and has a sample. Ouch.
I just want to mention the Nordlager show. Last July, Terwilligers and us, convoyed up to Cloquet for 2 days of Camping, Breweriana, Brewpubs, and Beer. The Nordlager Boys and Bert Whittington, sure do roll out the red carpet. We got a full tour of the renovations Bert is doing to the Northeastern, looks like he has his hands full with that project. We also hit Duluth and Fitgers Brewpub, Lake Superior Brewing, and Thirsty Pagan Brewpub, got a free sixer and opener from the Bert and the Boys, my truck died and called Miner for advice, it was a dead battery, our tent collapsed from Hurricane force winds and rain, and nearly got into at least 2 accidents because of others inattentive driving. All in all, a great time. If you ever happen to be near Cloquet stop in at the Northeastern, have a beer and say hi to Bert. You will not be disappointed.
Don’ t forget to renew your dues before December 31st.
So with a beer in hand here is my quote of the issue. From 11th century Tamil poet Kamban.“ I’ m verily like the cat sitting on the edge of an ocean of milk, hoping to lap it all up.”
Till next time, Jay Martin # 16605 President, Schell ' s Border Batch
