Music Talk with Robbie Russell B! 15 I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT IT’S OKAY TO EXPRESS YOURSELF. BRASH! What role has seasonal depression played in your personal life and music? RR: It affects me every year. I always know when it’s coming, to the extent where I feel like I need to have fun and enjoy myself before it sets in. I’m a songwriter, so I’m already more emotional and self-aware than the majority of people. When that seasonal depression sets in it can actually be pretty crippling, but it can also be motivating. It’s helped me create some of my best music to be honest. I was in an extremely dark place when I created ‘The Bad Guy.’ but it’s one of my most popular projects to date. It’s more about learning how to work with the seasonal depression rather than letting it defeat you. BRASH! Do you have any shows/visual releases coming up soon to promote the project? RR: I’m hopefully going to have some shows lined up for early 2020, but as of right now I’m not really looking to release any new content. I really want to take some time to focus on bettering myself and my writing so that I can get back to recording and building up my catalog. I also say I’m BRASH! How important is it to you to use your music not going to release to uplift the world? anything new, but I know RR: I don’t know about necessarily uplifting the world myself and I get stir crazy so because I tend to make some pretty heavy music, but the I’ll probably release some one thing I do know is that I want to make people feel new content by the end of something. I want people to know that it’s okay to express the year. yourself. It’s okay to be vulnerable and to be emotional. It’s okay to FEEL. 9 times out of 10, someone else out there has felt the same things that you have. You’re not BEFORE I'M alone and I want people to know that. BRASH! Out of the 6-songs on the EP, which track affects you the most? RR: They’re all so special to me, but I’d have to say the title track ‘ELYSIUM’ affects me the most. It’s such a happy, uplifting song. It’s probably the most positive song I’ve ever done. It was actually written over 2 years ago, but I was in such a dark, emotional space that I never felt motivated enough to record it. It took me until this summer to finally break out of that space, record it and release it. I knew it was one of my best songs, I just never felt like the timing was right until this year.
