Arbor Day
Celebrated Since 1872
We spent a beautiful spring day at Elm Bank Reservation in Wellesley, MA to celebrate this nationwide event. Each year since 1872, tree professionals, civic organizations, and school groups have joined together to donate their time and expertise. Public spaces across our nation are primped, pruned and planted with new trees that will serve as stewards of future generations. This year our team pruned veteran trees at historic Elm Bank to ensure a safe environment for its thousands of annual visitors.
It is well that you should celebrate your Arbor Day thoughtfully, for within your lifetime the nation’ s need of trees will become serious. We of an older generation can get along with what we have, though with growing hardship; but in your full manhood and womanhood you will want what nature once so bountifully supplied and man so thoughtlessly destroyed; and because of that want you will reproach us, not for what we have used, but for what we have wasted.
~ Theodore Roosevelt, 1907 Arbor Day Message
HMI gets a beehive!
Pollinators are among the hottest topics in environmental conversations these days and HMI is joining the fight to save these critical members of our planet! Our friends at Best Bees, Inc. installed our first honey bee hive and will stop by for routine check ups to ensure that we’ ll get a nice big crop of honey this year. Want to join us in our efforts? You only need about 1.5 ft x 3 ft of space – just enough room for the hive, and a little extra for the beekeeper to access it.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF POLLINATORS:
Insect pollination is integral to food security in the United States. Honey bees enable the production of at least 90 commercially grown crops in North America. Globally, 87 of the leading 115 food crops evaluated are dependent on animal pollinators, contributing 35 % of global food production.
Pollinators contribute more than 24 billion dollars to the United States economy. Honey bees account for more than 15 billion dollars through their vital role in keeping fruits, nuts, and vegetables in our diets.
