OUR MOTTO

Protect Yourself in Tick Season

Ticks live in moist and humid environments, particularly in or near wooded or grassy areas. Always walk in the center of trails, in order to avoid ticks. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Ticks do not jump or fly; ticks climb upward! Wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck your pant legs inside your socks to keep ticks from crawling inside. USE REPELLANT Use of an insect repellant containing DEET will provide protection against tick bites and other insects. Dr. Craig Hollingsworth, an entomologist with the Department of Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences at the University of Massachusetts also recommends permethrin treatment for clothing. Permethrin treatment is meant only for clothing and shoes and is available as a ready to use spray.
CHECK YOUR BODY FOR TICKS Carefully inspect the entire body for small, foreign, dark spots, especially in moist body creases, behind the ears, between toes, waistline, behind knees, armpits and hairline. TESTING TICKS FOR DISEASE UMass Extension provides tick testing weekly. For a fee, they will determine if the tick carries the bacteria which causes Lyme disease. A credit card sized tick identification tool showing the three major tick species attacking people and pets in the Eastern US is now available. For reference, we circled the two tick / life stages that are most often associated with transmission of Lyme disease. The other ticks shown also pose threat for spreading other diseases.

Gypsy Moth makes a comeback

Did you know that the gypsy moth is an example of an experiment gone
horribly wrong? The moth was brought to the United States in 1869 in an attempt to start a silkworm industry. The experiment failed. The gypsy moth escaped and has since become a major pest in the Northeast and Canada. Although these fuzzy creatures haven’ t presented a big problem since the early 1980’ s, they reared their ugly heads last season and are poised to be an equally large challenge as winter moth this year. Gypsy moths hatch later in the season so winter moth controls are not effective. They are not fussy eaters and target a wide variety of trees- ranging from mild to total defoliation.
