Dracula to Royalty
In the following century, the people of Brasov were given the privilege to
build a castle by then king, Louis I of Anjou. After 11 years, in 1388, the
edifice was complete, taking up two roles: a role of customs, being able to
hold a small percentage of imported or exported goods; a fortress role, as it
was placed at the border between Transylvania and Wallachia to avert from
eventual Ottoman invasions.
Unavoidably, the Ottomans raided Transylvania in the midst of the 15 th
century, but Bran played its fortress role accordingly, under the lead of the
Transylvanian Prince John Hunyadi.
Soon thereafter, the Princes of Transylvania requested Dracul to manage the
anti-Ottoman resistance as he was ruling Wallachia. Instead, Vlad passed
through Bran and attacked Brasov because he was malcontent regarding the
increase of taxes ordered by the Saxons of Transylvania, who also supported
his adversary for the throne. For this, Vlad burned the whole city.
