VOL.2 • BRAINSCIENCE | 13 The secret to your brain Different parts, different roles What do you know about yourself? You may say you know that you prefer to have a maple syrup waffle over an ice-cream waffle; you may say you like Marvels more than the other types of movies. However, how much do you really know about yourself? When we meant yourself, we meant the boss of your body – your brain. Sounds funny? Why is the brain the boss? Our brain manages different functionalities of our body, from our thinking, dreaming to exercising and singing. How does each specific area of the brain coordinate with each other, and what roles do they hold? Frontal lobe First, we have our frontal lobe. Frontal lobe is the boss that does the planning, judgments, decision making, social behavior, impulse control and spontaneity. Injuries on the frontal lobe could often cause a personality change, difficulty in controlling sexual urges and risk-taking behaviors. Our frontal lobe development does not stop until young adulthood, so it is important to provide mentally stimulating and educational experiences to yourself or your child until they are ready to face the world on their own! Parietal lobe What is there to life if there’s nothing to feel, see or explore? Luckily we have another boss who knows how to manage these senses and coordinate our body movement, regulate and process the body’s five senses, allowing us to produce speech, perceive objects and process related information. The main function of the parietal lobe is to interpret the position of the body in accordance with other objects in its surroundings. What will happen if this part of the brain is damaged? It might cause you to have problems with imagining things in 3 dimensions, difficulty in reading, writing and understanding symbols or language. 2. Lewis, T. (2018).
