Australia Day 2020
The 26th January was a perfect day to
celebrate the achievements of so many with
the presentation of Australia Day Awards by
Cr David Schefe & Cr Jan Chambers. All in
attendance had a wonderful day.
Order of Australia Medal – Mrs Marvelle
Kerslake – 60 years of dedicated service to
Mitchell and surrounding communities.
Citizen of the Year – Daryl Beitzen - Darryl
has been a selfless and tireless worker for the
Mitchell community since moving to Mitchell
many years ago and is always the first to offer
his help.
Young Citizen of the Year – Jackson Wyman
- Jaxson is the first Indigenous School Captain
at St Patricks School and he delivers the
Welcome to Country and speaks the
Gunggarri language. Jaxson plays the
Didgeridoo and passes this knowledge down
to his peers.
Community Events of the Year – Booringa
Fire & Water Festival 2019 – Booringa Action
Group - On 20 & 21 September 2019, the
Booringa Fire and Water Festival was revived
by the Booringa Action Group. The last time
the festival occurred was in 2012 and its
absence had been felt by the community and
its revival was embraced by the Mitchell
community.
Cultural Award – All Saints Anglican Church
– 130th Anniversary Dinner - On Saturday, 19
October 2019 the All Saints Anglican Church
celebrated 130 years, along with a book
launch and hostel reunion.
Junior Sports Award – Jett Cornelius- Jett
achieves high standards in all the sport he
participates in with his achievements including
being awarded Junior Sportsman at the 2019
Mitchell State School Awards night, gaining a
first and second place in the Maranoa
TRYathlon in 2018 & 2019, representing
Mitchell School in tennis at Roma, playing
soccer at the district and regional level in
Mitchell and Roma and being selected for
districts and regionals for shot put, high jump
and discus.
Member Contribution Award – Maranoa
Diggers Race Club - Maranoa Diggers Race
Club reformed in 2006 with a new committee
setting a race date for 2007.
When the club reformed there was no money
in the bank and the club had to maintain and
upgrade their own facility; they took on an
enormous job! They had to undertake
fundraising and seek sponsorship as the
facility needed many upgrades both from for
racing and the public facilities.
Achievement Award – Kent Morris - Kent
Morris has helped Rural Aid and our Buy a
Bale fodder assistance program on a number
of occasions over the last 6 years.
Biggest Morning Tea
The Biggest Morning Tea will be held on
Sunday 24 th May from 8 am to 1 pm at the
CWA Hall Mitchell. Over the next couple of
months, you will see Rebecca Smith in and
around Mitchell selling raffle tickets for prizes
that have been kindly donated by many who
support this cause

Containers for Change
Adrienne and Robin Mansfield commenced as
collectors on Monday, 20 January 2020. The
new-drop off point will be at Mansfield General
Freight, Lot 4&5 Dump Road, Mitchell. Don’t
forget to remove the lids. Operating hours will
be Monday & Thursday, 1pm – 5pm.
Community Days
Dunkeld, Mungallala and Morven families are
encouraged to come together over the next
month at three free community days
organised by Anglicare to destress and
socialise. Activities will include clay key-ring
making, mosaic tiling and sand art plus lucky
door prizes are up for grabs! Call 1300 114
397 to reserve for catering purposes. Dates
are 10/03 @ Morven Community Hall, 17/03
@ Dunkeld Golf Club, 31/03 @ Mungallala
Shire Hall, all from 10:30am to 2pm
