Quilts on Show
For seventeen years the Kenniff Country
Quilters have surprised and delighted the
locals with their quilts, leaving many viewers
in awe of their talent, patience and,
perseverance.
Tracey Gummow summed it up in her opening
speech as she spoke about Fat Quarters,
Charm Squares, One Block Wonders, Jelly
Rolls and the like. Really cute terms, but
technical to the craft and, best left discussed
with the ladies themselves if you are
interested to know more about the techniques.
Those little pieces of fabric that have been
pieced together into bigger pieces and then
into even bigger pieces are not only forming a
pattern on the wall. They are suggestive of the
pattern that we have all been called to live by.
To build each other up to step forward when
needed or back, supporting others to be the
best that they can be and live as a unified
whole. We are called to love one another. And
the Kenniff Country Quilters in doing what they
love, pouring over piecework and pouring out
pieces of themselves, do just that.
After cutting the 20 th Anniversary cake, Gay
Burey reflected on her first workshop one very
hot day in January 1999. “It all started with a
one off workshop in the Mitchell CWA Hall”
Gay said. Gay went on to tell how the ladies
enjoyed it so much that it became a monthly
institution but it wasn’t long before they out
grew the CWA hall and moved into the Craft
Cottage, within eighteen months the group
had grown so much that they were offered the
Home Economics room at the Mitchell State
School where they have sewn up some lovely
quilts and still meet on the second Sunday of
every month.
The group still have some original members
and many that have become involved along
the way and are always happy to take new
quilters under their wing and teach them this
wonderful craft.
