Mitchell | Amby | Mungallala Quilts on Show For seventeen years the Kenniff Country Quilters have surprised and delighted the locals with their quilts, leaving many viewers in awe of their talent, patience and, perseverance. Tracey Gummow summed it up in her opening speech as she spoke about Fat Quarters, Charm Squares, One Block Wonders, Jelly Rolls and the like. Really cute terms, but technical to the craft and, best left discussed with the ladies themselves if you are interested to know more about the techniques. Those little pieces of fabric that have been pieced together into bigger pieces and then into even bigger pieces are not only forming a pattern on the wall. They are suggestive of the pattern that we have all been called to live by. To build each other up to step forward when needed or back, supporting others to be the best that they can be and live as a unified whole. We are called to love one another. And the Kenniff Country Quilters in doing what they love, pouring over piecework and pouring out pieces of themselves, do just that. After cutting the 20 th Anniversary cake, Gay Burey reflected on her first workshop one very hot day in January 1999. “It all started with a one off workshop in the Mitchell CWA Hall” Gay said. Gay went on to tell how the ladies enjoyed it so much that it became a monthly institution but it wasn’t long before they out grew the CWA hall and moved into the Craft Cottage, within eighteen months the group had grown so much that they were offered the Home Economics room at the Mitchell State School where they have sewn up some lovely quilts and still meet on the second Sunday of every month. The group still have some original members and many that have become involved along the way and are always happy to take new quilters under their wing and teach them this wonderful craft. services, prevention program and advocacy.
