Dawn went to the Yuleba State School and is
the oldest student still alive. At the age of 13
years, she started work at McLoughlin’s Hotel
for 10 shillings a week and worked 13 hours a
day. All of Dawn’s family were known to be
good swimmers as they lived on the Yuleba
Creek and spent a lot of time swimming and
fishing.
Dawn often talks about of going to the dances
in Yuleba and nearby towns and would make
dresses for friends so she could afford to go
to them. I’m sure she would love to attend the
Cobb & Co Festival Ball if she could. Dawn

In preparation for the Festival weekend, Mark
is planning to walk the Surat-Yuleba ‘old
road’. Mark is doing it in honour of all the
many German-Queensland pioneers who
came to this amazing region (1850s – 1910).
This includes the many nameless shepherds,
farm labourers, vineyard growers (around
Roma particularly) and teamsters. Many
people’s remains lay in un-marked graves in
the bush. Mark’s walk is to honour those who
pioneered the region.
Festival committee member Jennifer
Schwennesen said, “We really wanted to
modernise the Cobb & Co Way for the
travelling public and be able to help them
have a guided tour along the 76km route
between Surat and Yuleba.”
“The development of a smartphone app was
a concept we pursued as a way of bringing
history to life but also enabling people to
experience the outback in a whole new way,”
she said.
The development of the App is funded by
FRRR (Foundation for Rural and Regional
Renewal).
