SOTA tours regional galleries throughout Queensland and is also displayed at the Convention Centre in Brisbane in October, where Queensland Quilters have their annual quilt show. The exhibition has no theme, but reflects each artist’s personality and favourite technique. Popular subjects are nature and social and environmental issues. A wide range of techniques are used by the artists, including painting, printing, eco dyeing, collage, hand and machine stitching and more. The work has to have two layers or more, held together in some way. Queensland Quilters objectives through SOTA are to bring together art quilters to exhibit their work and show their talents, give due recognition to the role of the art quilt as an art form and to demonstrate the changing role of the quilting arts. We want to promote art quilts to a broader section of the community by exhibiting SOTA in regional areas and we hope the visitors to the exhibition will gain a fuller understanding of what an art quilt is, and what techniques and materials can be used to create such a work. We also want to entice, captivate and entertain the viewer, and inspire and encourage new audiences. SOTA19 was juried by textile artist Jenny Bacon. The exhibition is sponsored by BERNINA and Queensland Quilters Inc.
