“Why buy the Cow?”
So how many of us have heard the old adage why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free? I’m sure a lot of us have. This phrase recently resurfaced on my Facebook timeline. (because that’s what I do all over my timeline – generate conversation. Follow me: Felicia Martin)
It reared its ugly head after I put up a post about a friend of mine who had decided to call off his relationship and not marry his girlfriend of 5 years due to some behaviors he noticed in the previous year. Immediately, the women responded asking “why did he waste her time”, “why did it take so long for him to realize..shouldn’t take 5 years” and of course, the inevitable, “why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?”
So let's answer the questions the ladies had: Why did he waste her time? First of all who determines it was a waste? So if every relationship doesn’t end in marriage..it was a waste? Relationships teach us things; provide us experiences and generates memories.
Some memories are blessings, others are lessons. But just because the relationship doesn’t end in marriage does not negate all the time the both of you spent loving each other. Also, that question totally devalues the time he has invested in the relationship, and all that he is contributed.
