SAPO boosts operations at Richards Bay SA Port Operations (SAPO) is committed to boosting efficiencies at the Richards Bay port’s dry bulk terminal. The Bosch Projects Team at SAPO. Project wins award The Ugu District Municipality’s R32,5-million rural household sanitation project, implemented between 2004 and 2006, has been awarded the SAICE National Award in the category of community based projects. This project also received the eThekwini Water Services Award for the most outstanding civil engineering achievement in the category of community based projects at the SAICE Durban Branch Awards this year. T he terminal, which was built in 1976 has large sections still operating with the original aged equipment and is struggling to cope with increasing demands. Efficiency levels are now reported as being at about 60% of the designed capacity. SAPO has appointed Bosch Projects, who has been involved in all the terminal expansion phases since 1996, as project management contractors for the refurbishment programme. Bosch Projects will oversee the restoration of large sections of original equipment, including conveyor routes, ship loaders and unloaders, as well as rail tipplers. “In conjunction with SAPO, Bosch Projects is geared to restore the Richards Bay bulk terminal to its former operational capacity, when it was dubbed ‘the Singapore of South Africa’ because of its high productivity levels,” says Dave Chappelow, business director of Bosch Projects. “We have mobilised a full team to site and are implementing a carefully structured refurbishment programme, to ensure that the project is carried out on schedule, with minimal disruption to port operations.” Contact Dave Chappelow – [email protected] Umgeni Water South Coast pipeline “Stemele Bosch Africa (Pty) Ltd were appointed by Umgeni Water for the Design, Tender and Construction Stages of the South Coast Umnini Booster Pumpstation,” says Mohammed Vawda, Director – Water Division. “The project involves the design of a new booster pumpstation at Umnini, with an ultimate peak capacity of 56.2 Ml/day, to serve a new dedicated 800mm diameter pipeline from Amanzimtoti Water Treatment Works to Quarry Reservoir, situated south of the Umkomaas River at Craigieburn.” Three separate contracts for the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Works were put out to tender and are presently under construction. Benefits were enhanced by extensive community participation in the project, resulting in substantial direct local economic benefits. Sensitive and holistic handling of environmental issues was complimented by effective project management provided by SBA’s ISO 9001 : 2000 certified Quality Management System.
