Durban Central Police Station keeps cool
SBA was appointed by the National Department of Public Works to investigate the inadequate air-conditioning system at
the existing SA Police Services Durban Central police station. Based on life-cycle costing analysis, it was decided to install
a new state-of-the-art energy efficient PLC controlled system.
T
he tall building, which also includes an annex structure, a number of
satellite buildings around the centre core and a large basement parking
garage, was a challenging air-conditioning project for the team.
This new energy efficient system, which incorporates an electronic building
management facility, will enable online management and monitoring, for
optimum control and energy utilisation.
Most of the air-conditioning will be by means of a chilled water fan coil unit
system, where chilled water is circulated around the building to 450 chilled
water fan coil units. The two chilled water generators are connected to
fibreglass cooling towers.
The contract is being carried out by Improvair Environmental Solutions
(Pty) Ltd and is due for completion in December 2006.
The air-conditioning plant room with chillers and pumping units is in
the final stages of installation.
The R13,5-million contract is one of the first major contracts issued by the
Durban office of the Department of Public Works using the new JBCC Series
2000 edition 4.1 documentation in line with CIDB requirements.
Bosch Projects wins again
Bosch Projects has been presented with the engineering
excellence award at the SAACE Glenrand-MIB Engineering
Excellence Awards function 2006, in the less than R5-million
category, held in Johannesburg recently.
T
his prestigious award was presented to Bosch Projects for the design
and implementation of a new chainless diffuser. The project was
completed in just 17 weeks, from inception to commissioning.
“The first installation of this patented chainless diffuser, which was recently
commissioned at UCL, replaces many of the high value items in a conventional
diffuser,” says Mike Gibbon, managing director of Bosch Projects. “This
means that these systems can be constructed at substantially lower costs
and for the first time can be expanded in capacity.”
In his acceptance address, Mike Gibbon paid tribute to the valuable
relationship of trust between UCL Company Limited and Bosch Projects.

Delivering effectiveness
“Team work and quality services are
fundamental to SBA achieving its vision
of being a world class African
infrastructure engineering company,”
says Sid Turner, SBA’s national
operations director. “SBA’s quest to
providing our clients with quality
engineering services is underpinned
by the company’s ISO 9001 : 2000
certified Quality Management System.
“

A
fter being certified ISO 9001 : 2000 compliant
in 2005, the company has had a successful
first surveillance audit by international auditors,
Dekra, in June this year. We are all committed to
the ongoing improvement of our system.
“As consulting engineers, teamwork or synergy
is critical to everything we do and this requires
certain soft skills, not dealt with in our technical
training.”
Accordingly, SBA leadership identified Steven
Covey’s ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’
as an appropriate foundational philosophy for
SBA.
Dominique Nass, an independent training
facilitator and coach, recently presented a series
of workshops to the team, entitled ‘delivering
effectiveness – the SBA way’ at regional offices
throughout the country.
“We are delighted with the over-whelming buyin by staff at all levels to proactive personal and
inter-personal skills development using the Covey

approach to effective delivery”, says Turner. “And
this, together with a structured approach to quality,
using the SBA Quality Management System, will
translate into achieving our motto of ‘transformation through delivery’.”
