12 Klipfontein WTW upgrade and refurbishment – mechanical and electrical Bosch Munitech has upgraded the Klipfontein Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, from a 10Ml/day facility to a 54Ml/day facility. The project team consisting of Rory Audie, Musa Mzolo and Clive Louis, started in January 2014 and the project is nearing completion with only commissioning of the works outstanding. The scope of works included the installation of two new vertical turbine raw water pumps and pipework, and the complete civil refurbishment of the raw water pump station. A new MCC panel was designed and installed in the raw water pump station. Large scale dredging was undertaken around the intake points to remove 30 000m3 of sludge that had built up around the tower. The design and installation of two new circular clariflocculators with four paddle mixing units was completed. The refurbishment of the two existing clarifiers by fitting mixers into an extended centre stilling well, was done to allow for more slow-mixing to take place and aid in flocculation. Nine new monolithic floor-type rapid gravity sand filters with new filter panel control desks and automated backwashing function were installed. New backwash pumps, blowers and compressors were installed to allow for the increase in backwashing capacity. A new MCC was designed and installed to allow for new instrumentation and control of the new filters and clariflocculators, along with telemetry and SCADA system to allow for automated control of the raw water, high lift and numerous reservoir pump stations. The Chlorine dosing room was upgraded to allow for automated dosing of 1-tonne cylinders and to meet safety requirements. Rory Audie – [email protected] Raw Water Pump Station. Chemical Dosing Plant.
