Bosch Stemele rehabilitates the surfacing of N2 from
Stanger to Mtunzini
In October 2014 Bosch Stemele completed a R200m contract
for the rehabilitation of the surfacing of a 57km section of
the N2 stretching from New Geulderland to Mtunzini. The
underlying asphalt layer was aged and breaking up and
this four-lane national road required ongoing maintenance.
SANRAL enlisted Bosch Stemele’s services to rehabilitate the
surfacing.
The rehabilitation process included:
• Milling out the asphalt on both slow lanes to a depth of
60mm
• Replacing the asphalt layer; and
• Surfacing the whole road with a new Ultra Thin Friction
Course (UTFC) surfacing.
Paving of road in progress.
The rehabilitation has given the roadway an anticipated 10 - 12
years additional lifespan, and the final UTFC surfacing provides
an exceptionally smooth driving surface.
Recycled asphalt (RA) technology was used for this project. It
was one of the early large projects in South Africa to make use
of 40% RA, as opposed to previous 25% RA levels. This more
environmentally friendly process resulted in significant savings
on new bitumen and aggregate, as well as savings on energy
and emissions.
The project was completed on schedule despite environmental
delays related to establishing a purpose-made dedicated
asphalt mixing plant in an existing quarry.

The upgrade and extension of the Swayimane
Water Supply Scheme
The Swayimane Water Supply Scheme was completed in
March 1998, but over the last 16 years the population and
water demand within the project area has grown significantly.
The initial scheme was designed for a basic level of service,
making allowance for 200 litres of water per person, per day
available at communal standtaps. However, the norm within
the community has now become individual yard connections.
This ‘higher’ level of service has therefore increased the
demand for water.
Swayimane bulk supply pipeline will also provide bulk water to
a community within the bordering Ilembe District Municipality.

The Umgungundlovu District Municipality appointed
Bosch Stemele to investigate and report on the feasibility
of providing an assured, potable, reticulated water supply
to the communities of Ekupholeni, Emabheleni, Odameni,
Vumuthando, Cupulakha, Mbhava and Mpethu. A Project
Business Plan was submitted to, and approved by, the
municipality and the Department of Water Affairs. The project
is currently in detailed design stage.
The completed project will supply a rural population of
approximately 57,200 peop
