BIO2WATT’S BIO-ENERGY COMES TO LIFE!
Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant
The Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant, the first of its kind in
Africa, has been designed, manufactured, supplied and
installed by Bosch Projects, in conjunction with Danish
Biogas Technology partner, ComBigaS, is due to produce its
first export bio-power towards the end of May / early June
2015.
The plant output will ramp up over a period of four months
to reach the expected production output of 4.2MWe. The
Thermophilic digestion process will take this amount of time
for the micro-organism population to grow sufficiently in order
to yield the design quantity of Methane production necessary
to generate the rated capacity output.
Significant challenges have been overcome by the project team
in order to ensure that the project is commissioned on time
and within budget. Cold commissioning has been successfully
completed and the plant Operator, Bosch Munitech, has
already established a presence on site. Intensive commissioning
activities have been undertaken with ComBigaS to ensure
that the introduction of biomass is carried out safely and in
accordance with the required procedures.
Sean Thomas, MD of Bio2Watt, says “The bio-power produced
will be consumed by the BMW motor assembly plant in
Rosslyn through a power wheeling agreement with Eskom
and the City of Tshwane Municipality.”
