The results of the most recent OECD survey on teachers (TALIS 2018) confirm once again that many teachers face significant barriers in accessing relevant and effective professional development. Few changes have been registered since previous surveys in 2013 and 2008. The School Education Gateway Teacher Academy has set out to address this problem by offering massive open online courses (MOOCs) for teachers. MOOCs substantially increase the accessibility of professional development and can facilitate communities of practice in which teachers can learn effectively from each other.
