VERDE: ‘GREEN’ DESIGN FOR RESORT FACILITIES Liel S. Gardon, with Jean Paul dela Rosa VERDE is a design for a resort hotel that invokes a feeling of being one with nature. Inspired by lush forests, the resort hotel is a refreshing respite from city living. Its design is meant to bring the outdoors in, through a contrast between nature’s raw elements and the polish of its refined forms. Images of verdant trees, cascading waterfalls, and natural stones are brought to mind as organic patterns are echoed in the design. The hues of green, brown, grey, and sunset orange found in nature are used as the color scheme. The hotel’s interior features plants and vertical gardens, creating a sense of continuity between outdoor and indoor spaces. Sustainable materials such as wood and other natural fibers are used. Picture windows allow natural light in, saving on electricity while allowing the outdoors to blend in with the interior. The space planning is conducive for both group gatherings and solitary relaxation. VERDE won first prize in the Estilo de Vida 2012, the 9th Interschool Interior Design Competition co-organized by the Philippine Constructors Association and the Philippine Institute of Interior Design. About the Designer and Faculty Adviser Liel S. Gardon is a graduate of the BS Interior Design program of the UP Diliman College of Home Economics. Jean Paul Dela Rosa is a lecturer in Interior Design at the College of Home Economics. He is also the owner of a design firm named iiideas. THE ART OF UPCYCLING Mitch Shivers Garbage is defined as discarded, useless material. However, through sustainable industrial design practices, functional art can be made out of salvaged items that have been upcycled or repurposed, and transformed into unique furniture pieces, lighting fixtures, sound systems, home accessories, etc., giving the original components a second life while providing economic and practical benefits for everyday living. 64 Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman An example of sustainable design is the lounge chair and side table set featured in the exhibition. The chair is from an upcycled 55-gallon industrial container drum, mounted on a repurposed TV picture tube frame. The lid of the container drum is transformed as its side table. About the Designer Mitch Shivers is an Industrial Designer whose artistic career spans various fields including corporate, manufacturing, consultancy, and academe. He is currently a lecturer at the College of Fine Arts, UP Diliman. As an antithesis to the nature of his profession, he strives to move away from designing for conformity in mass production; “made by human hands” is the trademark of his work. GREENER FAST FOOD PACKAGING IN THE PHILIPPINES Patricia Ann T. Mallare Packaging plays an integral role in anything that we do. We interact with it every day. It protects the products that we buy. It ensures that these products will not be contaminated; likewise, it increases the products’ shelf-life. In turn, it protects us from harmful toxins that can get to us through the products we purchase. Packaging therefore, in any shape or form, affects our lives directly and indirectly. Like everything else around us, packaging needs to be linked with the ‘green’ lifestyle. This means that the environmental impact of the packaging system – from its production, which includes material selection and processing, to its disposal – needs to be considered. This project developed an eco-friendly takeaway packaging system for local fast food chains. The design features a new clamshell system and takeaway strap made from paper-based materials. A reusable strap made from recycled plastic is introduced to encourage customers to reuse it for another takeaway order. This new design addresses compliance to the ban on plastic and Styrofoam packaging, and promotes a greener lifestyle among Filipinos. About the Designer Patricia Ann T. Mallare took Industrial Design as a second degree. The skills she learned as a designer is complemented by her first degree in Psychology. Her Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman 65
