PHILIPPINE NEO-ETHNIC TEXTILES Faculty and students of the BS Clothing Technology program The faculty and students of the BS Clothing Technology (BSCT) program of the UP College of Home Economics designed garments and accessories using the Philippine Neo-ethnic Textiles developed by the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) of the Department of Science and Technology. PTRI innovated on the Inabel of Ilocos, Hablon of Iloilo, Piña of Aklan, Inaul of Maguindanao, T’nalak of Lake Sebu, and Hinabol of Bukidnon by incorporating natural dyes and materials endemic to the Philippines, as well as scientific and technological methods in the different stages of textile production. These textiles were transformed into garments and accessories through the designs of the BSCT faculty and students. They engineered the silhouettes to be functional for school, work and play. They combined the different materials and explored decorative finishes such as beadwork, printing and dyeing to complement the textile and create a unique aesthetic expression. About the Designers The designers are affiliated with the Department of Clothing, Textiles, and Interior Design of the College of Home Economics PARADOX AS DESIGN INSPIRATION Francis Miguel Mariano (Head Designer), Joanna Guinhawa, Catherine Pascual, Erika Nicole Querijero & Klayre Angela M.Tan, with Johanna Acab-Faustino (Faculty Adviser) In PARADOX, two seemingly contradictory styles are brought together in harmony: the Baroque style, which is lavish, dramatic, and bold; and the Industrial style, which is simple and raw, with exposed elements that never forgo functionality. These two styles from different time periods and of opposing essences are brought together in a stylish and livable contemporary living space to create a harmonious interior environment transcending limitations of time, space, lifestyles, and conventions. PARADOX won 1st prize in Obra Maestra 2013, the interschool interior design competition of the 18th Philippine World Building and Construction Exposition (WORLDBEX 2013). About the Designers and Faculty Adviser Francis Miguel Mariano is pursuing Interior Design as his second bachelor’s degree in response to his growing interest and passion in the field of design. He believes that a holistic experience in interior spaces is what constitutes successful design. Joanna Guinhawa is a full-time design enthusiast and part-time homebody who enjoys singing in the shower, shooting hoops in the park, and playing with her dogs. She takes pride in our culture and is mostly inspired by contemporary Filipino and resort design. Catherine Pascual, although mostly holed up in the happenings of the WWW, takes her cues and inspirations from nature and culture. She believes in the capacity of spaces and places, and that the earth without art is just ‘eh’. Erika Nicole Querijero is a full-time Interior Design student and a part-time blogger. She is mostly inspired by simple yet highly functional designs. Though her inspirations come from the simplest of things, her designs are fully enriched with accents that uniquely make them her own. Contemporary living conditions are a paradox – living spaces and lifestyles seem to contradict one another. Among modern-day families, small-space living is common; within this small space, a host of activities are carried out daily. Moreover, within the families’ fast-paced lifestyle, there must be a space for family bonding. Klayre Angela M. Tan is a BS Interior Design student at the University of the Philippines. It is her goal to serve people from diff erent socioeconomic status by enhancing their lifestyle through practicing responsible interior design. When multi-functionality becomes too complicated, simple and intelligent space planning is the answer. Interestingly, the paradoxical living conditions can, in themselves, become a design inspiration. This design project, aptly titled PARADOX, shows how this could be done. Johanna Acab-Faustino is an Assistant Professor in Interior Design at the College of Home Economics, where she also finished her Master of Interior Design. She handles courses in Design Presentation, History of Furniture and Styles of Decoration, and Design (Residential, Set, Theater and Commercial Design). 62 Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman Paliwanagan sa UP Diliman 63
