Hot tips to keep you warm The bitterly cold season is here! There are a few simple things you can do to keep warm in winter, which don’t involve cranking up the heater. Here are a few tips that should help stave off the cold. Become a baker Just because you have vowed to save on electricity and use a heater sparingly doesn't mean your home has to be cold. Luckily there is another heat source: the oven. Using it will heat up your kitchen quickly. Plus, you’ll be left with a fresh-from-the-oven batch of chocolate chip cookies to combat any residual chills. Do some laundry There’s nothing like clothes fresh out of the dryer to keep you warm. Use the freezing temps as your excuse to finally do that pile of laundry, then bask in the post-dryer warmth. Snuggle up Save on your electricity bill this winter and get cosy with warm blankets. Maybe even dig out your hot water bottle, although you should never use it in bed if using an electric blanket too. While sleeping, ensure you stay toasty by wearing pyjamas and bed socks to keep your feet from getting cold overnight. Break out the hot water bottle Skip the electric blanket, which will jack up your electricity bill, in favour of a more low-tech bed warmer: the hot water bottle. If you don’t want to run to the shops to buy one, you can also heat up a pack of dried beans or rice in the microwave for a minute, wrap it in a pillowcase, and slide it between your sheets for a few hours of warmth. Get moving Working out in the cold may be the last thing you feel like doing this winter but it will make you feel better and warmer. As well as giving you a rush of endorphins, which boosts mood, exercise will get the blood pumping around your body, and increase your core body temperature, which will warm you all over. Page 20
