Types of Masks worn in the Carnivals of Venice

1.Bauta

Th e bauta is a mask

which is often heavily

gilded though

originally simple

stark white, which is designed to comfortably cover the entire face. It was usually worn by men, but many paintings done in the 18th century also depict women wearing this mask.

2.Columbina

The Columbina is a

half-mask, only

covering the

wearer's eyes, nose,

and upper cheeks. While both men and women now wear this mask, it began as a woman's analog to the bauta, and actually it is an entirely a modern creation.

3.Medico della peste

The Medico della peste,

with its long beak,

is one of the most bizarre

and recognizable of the

Venetian masks.

Actually it wasn’t made for

carnival but as a method of preventing the spread of disease. Now, many people wear it during the festival.
