Summer Hair: From Day To Play

By: Melissa Sadler

Summer’s here and it's time to leave your mark on the sun, though it usually works out the other way around. In Florida, where I'm from, the beaches are teaming with whatever abs, or dreams of said abs survived the winter. The vacations are booked, the flip-flops are chattering atop the boardwalks and the sun is high, along with the humidity. Outside of Christmas, summer serves as our favorite time of year, even with the Florida locals wearing Uggs in 90 degree weather. With the weeks barreling towards the fall and winter soon after, we simply cannot waste the last of our vacation days from work binge watching Netflix and counting, or forgetting to count, calories. No, we must Carpe diem the wings off of summer, leaving a trail of fierce Instagram selfies depicting beautiful memories, breathtaking adventures and most importantly, our most successful summer hair days.

But let's be candid for a moment. Great hair days do not just happen on their own. With the scorching temperatures transforming your forehead into a sweaty reflective surface, while simultaneously simulating a long, awkward hug from a stranger, styling our hair can easily become just another challenge. So, how do we reap the spoils of summer without spoiling summer? Strategy. We simply have to have one. But no worries, I’m here to help.

As a first-generation American born to Jamaican parents, “Big Up Jamaica,” I am genetically predisposed to taming frizz in Caribbean climate. Did I mention that I’m natural? For me, it means that I wear my crown of coils, kinks and curls, as my hair naturally occurs, without the use of any chemical manipulation. Now that my qualities and qualifications have been made perfectly apparent, or at the very least, mildly intriguing, let’s dive into how to tackle the summer hair struggle from daytime to play time.
