COOKING
CL UB
A delicious challenge await s you
By: Emily F. and Suricke B.
Do you find yourself saying the only thing
you can cook is a bowl of cereal? Do you ever
watch your parents cook and wonder how they
do it? Maybe the AOA Cooking Club can help
you out! This club is for those who know little to
nothing about cooking, as well as for the more
experienced chef who is looking for a challenge.
Each month the club hosts a cooking
challenge. Challenges are simple and
straightforward and also adaptable for anyone
wanting to attempt a more complex recipe.
Participants take a selected ingredient and find
a recipe of their choosing to prepare with the
featured ingredient. Finally, student chefs share
their culinary creations at the next meeting.
Because of AOA's diversity, the Cooking
Club gives students a chance to showcase their
culture and country's cuisine with international
challenges, as well as learn some typical
American dishes. Some possible future
challenges include pizzas, hamburgers,
sandwiches, soups, and pastas..
For September, the Cooking Club
challenge is ice cream. Participants may select
any flavor they desire, as well as ice cream type
8
(sherbet, dairy-free, sugar-free, etc.). Members
will share their ice cream recipes at the October
meeting.
Cooking Club is not just a place to make
something. Last year the club participated in
community projects wherein members could
serve others through cooking. One project was a
cookie drive for some of AOA's English
teachers. Members were asked to bake cookies
and send them to Mrs. Puckett (previous club
leader) and she dispersed them. A possible
project this year is having members make a
meal for extended family members, e.g. aunts,
uncles, grandparents.
Feel free to join the club or just visit one
of the upcoming meeting to see what it's like.
The next meeting is planned for October 19th, at
2:30pm CT. Please join us!
