Th e Ex peri ences of a Homesch ool A th l ete By William M. There is more to being homeschooled than just learning subject matter. For example, many homeschoolers are quite busy being involved in extracurricular activities, volunteering, and the arts. Some talented homeschoolers are also interested in athletics. While this is a great passion for them to pursue, they, like me, may not be able to participate in their local school?s athletics programs. Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for basketball, which I have been playing recreationally for many years. Last year, I approached one of the high school varsity coaches in my area and asked about potentially trying out for the team the following year. After discussing the situation with the other coaches, he gave me the criteria that I would need to fulfill to be on the team. He said, ?You need to enroll in this high school, take four classes, and have passing grades on three out of the four.? On the surface, this does not sound like a tough standard to fulfill. However, I wanted to remain at Alpha Omega Academy. This is a common situation for homeschoolers to encounter 14 in my area. Depending on location, the homeschool family might own a home and pay taxes, yet their children will not be able to participate in their local school district?s activities. If you can?t participate, do not feel rejected. In my case, I was given some encouragement. The coach told me, ?You are an extraordinary person. We have had many players with less athletic ability than you who have become successful varsity athletes.? These sincere words from the local high school coach gave me confidence that helped me in other areas of my life. Editor?s Note: I presented my unedited article to the local high school coach. Within a week, I was invited to be an honorary player. I will be able to participate in all team activities except the actual game. My parents were awarded free tickets and great seats to watch the upcoming game. During the game, I will be active in warm-ups and on the bench during the game. Even though this seems insignificant, this is a great step for me towards achieving my goals. I encourage you to look for a potential opportunity similar to mine.
