Last month, I met Adadu. I “attacked” him for being scarce. He told me
he was busy. He makes at least a set of furniture per month for special
clients aside the normal orders here and there. He just got a contract to
furnish a hotel and also one of the big furniture companies have com-
missioned him to do some chairs under their brand.
2 years ago, Adadu invited me for his “house warming” — aka come-see-
my-new-house. He showed me pictures (as I could not make it) and it
was not a small house. He thanked me profusely for opening the door
to big clients. I told him it has never been about me but him. It has
been about his ability to deliver quality work on time and at competi-
tive rates.
Ndaka. I ran into Ndaka two years ago at a conference. We were col-
leagues in the University. We went down memory lane and reminisce
about a number of things. I knew her as a banker and so I inquired how
things were in that sector. She started singing a different song. She had
quit about two years ago and ventured out on her home / industrial
cleaning gig. I was surprised. She was not that type; so I thought.
She told me how she stumbled on it and offered it as a free service
to a number people. After a while she monetized the venture and was
shocked to see people were willing to pay. That was when the light
bulbs came up. She then took out time to get the training and formal-
ized it. Since she could only render service over the weekend, she re-
signed from her job and took this new gig heads on.
I was thrilled on her behalf as she reeled out who her current clients
are and the long term contracts she was about to sign with some cor-
porations. Not bad for a shy girl, who could barely look you in the eye
when having a conversation. The difference maker was that she kept
at it.
