Of Fall Planting
As summer comes to an end , and we start preparing for fall planting in our gardens , it is exciting to realize that there are benefits to planting at this time of year !
First of all , we have optimal temperatures , as the stress of summer heat fades away . You still want the soil to be warm , but you want the air above the soil to be cool , which is less burdensome to your plants . Those cool autumn nights provide a stress-free environment for your newly planted treasures .
Precipitation is usually more predictable in the fall , as well , keeping the moisture level more consistent in the garden . However , in some parts of the Maritimes , we can still have some very dry fall seasons . You need to be mindful of the weather when planting in the fall and make certain that your plants receive regular watering . You can ’ t just plant and then forget it . Remember , too , that whatever moisture is present , will not evaporate as quickly as it does in the heat of the summer , so your watering cycle will be affected . You will most likely water less from September onward .
Typically , fall weather conditions are great for increased root growth . Generally , we see that 40 % of root growth , - whether in established plants or in the newly planted , - takes place in the fall of the year . This gives the new additions to your garden all of the fall season to establish root growth , and then it still has the spring to produce more roots before you get into the heat of the following summer . This will give you much better odds of your plants surviving .
