Our Pro Bono Work

Throughout the year, our attorneys and paralegals demonstrated an unwavering commitment to pro bono service, applying their legal skills where they were needed most to advance justice, dignity, and opportunity. Our colleagues devoted countless hours to long-term matters requiring persistence and compassion and the results speak for themselves. Below, are just some of the stories that reflect our belief that meaningful advocacy can change lives and strengthen communities.
Young KIND Client Receives Permanent Resident Card
Standing with California During Wildfire Recovery
When California wildfires struck, Blank Rome’ s attorneys mobilized quickly to provide direct pro bono assistance to individuals and families navigating the immediate aftermath. Attorneys, including Cory R. Bernard, Saul Breskal, Cheryl S. Chang, Jamie Garelick, Andrew G. Martin, Mya J. K. Roberts, Daniel H. Rylaarsdam, Caitlin I. Sanders, Saam Takaloo, Brittany Wei, and Benjamin M. Wigley, volunteered through state and local legal aid partners to support wildfire victims with insurance claims, Federal Emergency Management Agency(“ FEMA”) advocacy, disaster-related legal questions, legal information tables, Disaster Resource Centers, and specialized disaster-response trainings.
This work was spearheaded by the firm’ s Insurance Recovery practice, which has extensive experience advising policyholders on complex coverage issues across industries. That perspective enabled attorneys to help wildfire victims understand policy terms, address coverage disputes, and access available benefits, an area where many individuals lack meaningful guidance at critical times. In parallel, the firm’ s Severe Weather Emergency Recovery Team(“ SWERT”) launched a dedicated wildfire resource hub to support affected colleagues and clients.
After seven years of advocacy, Martin S. Krezalek and Gregory P. Cronin successfully helped our pro bono Kids in Need of Defense(“ KIND”) client— originally from Honduras— obtain her permanent resident card. The client was only five years old when she crossed the border alone, having endured abuse, neglect, and abandonment by family members. Martin and Greg appeared at dozens of Immigration Court and Family Court proceedings. Integral to the success of the matter, Delenia Perez
played a vital role, serving as a trusted translator, coordinating meetings, court appearances, and medical appointments, and ensuring all filings were timely, accurate, and complete.
Immigration Pro Bono Client and Family Secure Legal Status in America
John Paul“ J. P.” G. Dominguez began representing a pro bono client and his family in 2022 as they sought asylum in the United States after fleeing Afghanistan amid escalating threats from the Taliban. Three years later, the family received the long-awaited news that their asylum application had been approved. Adding to the milestone, the client later shared that his mother and brother also secured permanent residency in the United States. J. P. reflected that being a part of the family’ s journey— from escaping Taliban persecution to achieving meaningful legal status— has been profoundly inspiring and deeply rewarding.
