“ I had to learn a lot of different things that I hadn ’ t done before very quickly . I built the website myself , figured out book keeping and how to do some graphic design for my logo . The people skills are so important ; I have to talk to heaps of people , and I can ’ t be afraid to do it . I developed my people skills through working at a restaurant which has been a great help . “ From having done all this I think I could start any business now , if I can co do it once , I can do it again , I ’ m very happy to have learned these skills and anything else that can help my business .”
Learning the skills of running business means that it can run smoothly but know the right people can take your business to places you might not have thought of . When I ask Daniel if he is involved in networking groups and chamber of commerce , this capable young man is already one step ahead .
He is already attending Blacktown Chamber of Commerce meetings and has been going to food and beverage trade shows and making contacts through the people he meets at these events .
“ I ’ ve been working with a few coffee roasters and met heaps of people who are interested in coffee , it ’ s really interesting to see how everyone runs their business . I enjoy making contacts and connections , meeting people as well , not to get people to help me or buy my coffee , but because I like talking to people .”
Daniel is quite realistic when it comes to how long it will take to build his business up and doesn ’ t see himself running it full
time for quite a few years . Instead he thinks he will run it part time while he continues his studies after his HSC at university or TAFE . He also had some great advice for other young people who think they might want to start a business of their own .
“ If you are at school and don ’ t do much after school , the first thing is to get a job after school to get experience of working with people and understand what organisational skills to need to maintain a job .”
“ If you have an idea on what you would like to do , go and talk to someone who is already doing what you are trying to do and ask them lots of questions . For example , ask how they got started , what they enjoy about it , what the tough parts are and don ’ t just ask one person , go to a few people in your area and different ones to understand the different demographics .”
This savvy business man has already got a realistic idea of how business works and knows it ’ s not a static thing but that starting a business doesn ’ t mean it will stay as the thing you first started it as .
“ People pivot in business all the time ; they start in one thing and then slowly change to include something related to it . There is always growth in business . I have been talking to Max about the other parts of the coffee business I can expand to or skills I could pick up to help me in the future .”
