NAIDOC Week - a chance for not just learning but immersion
Learning is a lifelong journey . It ’ s one thing to be told information , but it ’ s another to practically apply it .
National NAIDOC Week took place last month from 7 – 14 July . It is designed as a celebration and recognition of the history , culture , and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples . At Mountain View Adventist College , NAIDOC Week was designed to go beyond your standard education . Students spent each day of NAIDOC Week focused on a different area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievements , artists , authors , doctors , athletes and musicians .
Each day was also filled with different activities that correlated with the influential individuals that were being focused on .
“ For NAIDOC Week this year , we wanted to make sure the students went beyond just knowing who these people are . We wanted them to immerse themselves in the culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples ,” said Carmen Castaneda , P-6 Wellbeing Coordinator at Mountain View Adventist College .
By doing this , students felt encouraged to have conversations amongst each other about NAIDOC Week and its significance to the community .
“ A lot of the students knew who these people were but didn ’ t necessarily know their background . We ’ re proud that we are able to do this every year , allowing the students to have more of a culturally rich experience ,” Carmen said .
