Mountain View celebrated NAIDOC Week with beautiful student art installation
Traditional dances , delicious damper and unique art pieces is how Mountain View Adventist College celebrated NAIDOC week this year .
NAIDOC week was held from 26-29 June 2023 under this year ’ s theme of ‘ For Our Elders ’.
Year 11 Mountain View student Kyla-Jade was invited to create a beautiful painting in honour of NAIDOC Week last year and brought it back to campus for this year ’ s festivities .
Kyla-Jade comes from three of the largest tribes in Australia - Wiradjuri , Bundjalung and Kamillaori , with connections to Condoblin , Nygen , Fingal and Moree , so culture and family are deeply embedded in her day to day life .
The artwork she created in collaboration with her mum represents how Mountain View is on a journey to grow and learn more from each other and the land they gather on every day .
Each element in her painting represents different Indigenous elements such as journey , gatherings , transformation , growth and movement .
“ Mountain View is a family who are on a journey . We gather every single day to learn from each other about cultural safety , awareness , our differences and we celebrate our differences and reconcile ,” Kyla-Jade said .
Other activities that took place during NAIDOC week included the blessed sounds of the didgeridoo , face painting and students sharing what NAIDOC means to them . Students also attended a Commemorative Chapel where they learnt what it meant to “ Get Up ! Stand Up ! Show Up !” with First Nations students wrapping up the with week with a cultural dance performance .
