BLACKTOWN ’ S FINEST ...

Emma Hoskins is this year ’ s Blacktown City Young Citizen of the Year . by John Mcdonald
Emma Hoskins hasn ’ t turned 13 yet and she ’ s already done enough to call stumps , or at least have a drinks break .
She was announced as Blacktown City Young Citizen of the Year at the 2023 Australia Day awards ceremony , attended by Mayor Tony Bleasdale and NSW Governor Margaret Beazley . The exhaustive citation read : ‘’ As a proud Wiradjuri , Gamilaraay girl living and learning on Darug land , Emma ensures that she shares her culture with her community by leading school ceremonies and assemblies , conducting Acknowledgment of Country , teaching dance , establishing a bush-tucker garden and producing quality and awardwinning Aboriginal artwork .
“ Emma is a part of the Blacktown Youth Advisory Committee , where she enjoys collaborating with the youth of Blacktown City and regularly participates at formal council events .
“ Emma is an all-round star student , athlete , community representative and cultural ambassador who is making her mark in the world .”
Phew . Call for a time-out . It ’ s enough to make any mature age adult reflect on a seriously wasted life .
Stumps ? To twist , punish and pummel the sporting analogy and have it on the mat for the count , Emma should at least put the boots to one side and enjoy a pre-lunch drinks break . Where to start ? Well , Emma attended Quakers Hill Public School where she was a prefect and member of the SRC and has started at The Hills Sports High on an athletics scholarship . “ I like walking and distance running ,” Emma said .
“ Mum told me about Quakers Hill Little Athletics so I thought I ’ d give it a go .”
Give it a go she did . To date Emma has qualified for a second year at the Australian Junior National championships in Brisbane next month and warmed up at the NSW state championships on the weekend . Emma came second , gained a PB and beat her previously set club record .
“ I compete in 1500m-3000km racewalking and 3km-5km in running and I ’ m not old enough to compete any further ,” she said , the inference being she ’ d like to .
Jody , Emma ’ s mum , said her daughter had been lucky .
